Tsunami Emergency Recovery Programme – Phase II Rehabilitation of the Kalutara-Matara A2 Highway

The project involves the rehabilitation work on the A2 Highway from Kalutara to Matara, a distance of 115 kms plus 2.5 km of bypass. The project was implemented under three contract packages:

(1) Kalutara to Hikkaduwa (55Km) (2) Hikkaduwa to Unawatuna (20Km)
(2) Unawatuna to Matara (40Km)
The two road sections Kalutara – Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna – Matara

The scope of the rehabilitation work on the Kalutara-Galle section involved patching and placement of 50mm asphalt concrete overlay. On the Galle to Matara segment the work consisted of removal as required of existing bituminous base course, reinstatement with aggregate base course, deep patching and placement of 80mm asphalt concrete base course and 50mm asphalt concrete wearing course. The work on both sections includes construction of 1.5 metre wide shoulders on both sides of the carriageway, repair / replacement of damaged culverts and construction of appropriate bus bays, road marking and traffic signs
