SIDA Funded Feasibility Study on Alternate Highway (Expressway) Between Colombo and Kandy

The Colombo-Kandy A1 road and the Ambepussa – Kurunegala – Trincomalee Road (A6) are among the most important trunk roads in the country. The Colombo – Kandy road is heavily used and severely congested, especially in the section between Colombo and Ambepussa. This portion of the road is used by traffic between Colombo and Kandy and between Colombo – Kurunegala and Trincomalee.

The need for expanding the existing transport network in the Colombo – Kandy corridor has become imperative, given the industrial development which is now taking place in the country, and particularly in this corridor.
